The only thing worse than experiencing grief is watching a friend suffer and not knowing what to say.
John Piper first advises us not to be drained by our friends’ sufferings but instead offer faithful support. Likewise, he suggests showing empathy by being “seen and known by your presence and your patience and your mercy.” Piper reminds us that righteous people suffer all the time (Hebrews 11) but through faith and perseverance, they are able to experience triumph.
Rather than trying to connect your friend’s suffering to sin, encourage them as they fight and pray constantly for relief.
